Steam in AUD?
I live in Australia, and the exchange rate to USD is not ideal at the moment. I was wondering if it was possible to change it to Australian dollars instead? I heard Steam was adding the currency, but I could never find if it was implemented.

Any help would be great!

i don't want this. games will end up costing way more. please god don't do it. i'd rather cop the exchange rate

Pretty sure all it does is convert the currency.

no it wont. thats not how tax works. anything sold in australia is subject to a host of taxes no limeted to GST and Luxury taxes. just do the math in ur head (or use google if u cant do it...)

its a convenience thing. instead of seeing $60 and thinking "i get paid in 2 days, i'll spend the last of my pay on this" only to realise it's nearly $80, we will finally be able to know exactly what we will be paying.

I don't know how many times ive been jipped out of those few extra dollars i was gonna use to buy smokes or whatever, all because steam is 5 years behind with adding currencies.

just do the math and avoid the added taxes (that game wont be 80 it will be 90)
Pc Games are still expensive at EB far cry 4 is at a higher price then the ps4 version last time I checked crazy. and games should be.cheaper for digital downloads I don't get why their not its like they think we're stupid not noticing how cheaper it is for them to sell digital downloads

When I tried to purchase a 19.99 dollar game recently, I thought that won't be much, but when I got my bill, I saw 28.44, WTH, so the next time I saw a game coming out for 79.99. I won't even think about it. That's almost 110 dollar AUD.
If our country's currency continue to drop, it felt we are paying almost double the price compared to US people...

It's worse against the GBP, but I don't know how much they charge for things to begin with. Hopefully the AUD will go up a bit soon...?

You'd hope so, but it looks likely to fall further with China in the ♥♥♥♥. Hopefully we'll be classed as a poor country like Russia and instead of Australia tax we get Australia discount.
with the aussie dollar at 69c USD the steam market is closed for me, it will eb cheaper to buy new games rtail from eb or jb-hi-fi untill steam add the AUD currency i'd advise most to do the same, we are already paying more for some games than in the us why should we pay almost tripple :/
Valve has been consistently running at a profit for a substantial amount of time.

Until it is fiscally worth their while, we will not get an $AU option.

To their credit, they don't claim to offer good customer service.

It isn't beneficial to them as a company - like their PR policy.
Why pay for something when you don't have to?

The problem is, we as a consumer group continue to tolerate this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ whereas if they were in any other industry, they would've changed years ago.

My 3c.
Part of the issue however is steam has a habit of listing the games price in AUD in USD, so a game that would be 80 AUD they list as 80 USD regardless of the actual exchange rate (then most likely just pocketing the difference). Something they have been doing for a while with GBP and Euro if I recall right.

The other issue with the GST is, it is going to cost the government more to collect it than they will make from the transactions, that is why it had the $1000 limit before incurring GST on imports in the first place. That is presuming companies just don't go "stuff it we wont supply Australia then" (most companies keep saying they don't see us as a trivial market already).

Lol, i never buy new games on steam. If you have half a brain you will just go buy the steam key off ebay and pay half the price. Like right now you can buy a fallout 4 steam key for $70 AUD on ebay not $79 USD on steam.

Edit* only downfall is it doesn't add to your steam level. big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ whoop lol.

You can set the Currency when viewing Steam via a Web Browser and as you can see from the examples below, the Australian Dollar redirects to US Dollars, while many others are available.

Due to the USD, even with the Holiday discounts coming, its not worth buying games on steam unless it is over 60% discount.

* You need to be logged out on the steam website to see these:

How do you know that shows the AUD prices? I thought Steam simply didn't support Australian prices, and defaulted to USD when that URL was invalid.

we dont have a currency yet we are a contant
If i understand this right displaying prices in AUD shows what the exchange rate states that it would cost in australia, plus the 10 percent for the goods and services tax on digital media?

Should the US Dollar recover to the point where 1 USD is once again Worth 2 AUD, going to EB Games for steam a steam card that is worth 20 USD is going to cost 40 AUD plus EBs' cut and any thing I purchase through steam would cost 10 percent less if their was NO GST on digital media.

Where as with anything free, 10% of 0 is still 0.

How does it work with free to to play games. that rely on micro transactions and are located outside Australia, will each micro transaction cost australians 10% more, that game companies then pass on to the Australian Government?

how will the government ensure they actually get their 10%?
