Is steam down right now?

It logged me off and i cant get back on, I'm using the browser right now and can log into my steam account from here.

Why do they never tell us ahead of time, or even during why it is down?

Seems like some servers are, i'm unable to sell an item on the market right now. Just wait a while, it''ll get back on

if you click the friends tab it will say that the servers are down when they are or something but yeah a "real" notification system would help i quess

I'd like to know why and for how long.

Notifications are a simple and professional feature.
Truly not the hallmark of steam or valve, I know...

they could work on fixing the downed servers it insted of talking to you about why and how long you know ..
