MAJOR Fallout 3 & Windows 8 Problem! PLEASE REPLY!

Okay, I know that this isn't the first time this has been discussed here, but I need EXTREME help with the popular issue that poses an annoying problem for Fallout 3. Here's the backstory:

I just got a Lenovo Y100 gaming laptop (At least I think that is the name) and it came with Windows 8.1. I only recently got into PC gaming, and I only have my favorite game bought on it (Fallout 3). So I instantly installed Steam and then Fallout.

Here's where the problem begins: So I click on the icon and the small box appears with "Play" "Options" "Tech Support" ect.

When I click "Play" NOTHING HAPPENS. (Like the box just disappears)

Obviously I look up this problem and find a few people with the same situation. They're given all the same answers that either work for them, or don't... none have worked for me... So before you give me the same options to fix this problem, let me tell you the ones I've tried so far:

- There's one where you go into the game files and replace a code that says THREADtexture1 or something and go down a line below and type something new.

- I tried going into the launcher properties to replace my Windows 8 compatibility with 7, Vista, XP (All service packs), and everything else but it usually does nothing or gives me an error of some sort.

- I tried downloading Games For Windows Live, but each time I finish the install, it gives me an error saying, "Install failed. A network error occurred while attempting to get information from the server. Check your network connection and retry." And it gives me a support option/log folder option. .

- Then there is a mod that supposedly patches all Windows 7 & 8 problems I'm facing. And after struggling for hours to finally get the Nexus Mod Manager, I get the mod ready to download. BUUUUT apparently when I click the play button that begins the mod install, it takes but a few seconds before it automatically stops itself and says "Incomplete".

- I ran as administrator. Nada.

- I uninstalled then reinstalled Fallout 3. Again, that helped nothing.

- I messed with the options for FO3 by turning the settings low along with resolution or whatever the internet told me. Nothing.

So can someone please help me? I'm extremely tired and ♥♥♥♥ed off because I spent practically all night trying to resolve this with absolutely no results.

I was in dire need of a new laptop in general for college coming up, and the fact that I wanted to cross over to PC gaming - so far, I'm not happy.
And by the way, when I first installed the game, it said that it will run on ULTRA HIGH settings, so graphics and textures can't be the problem.

If ANYONE can help me, you will have my undying thanks for this. I haven't played a Fallout game in over a year and I wanted to start with my favorite, so that's why I'm striving so hard for this one in particular.

Please go to the Fallout3 Discussion Board and read the help in the Pinned Threads there.

For one; u need the following installed as an Admin:
- Visual C++ (2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) Both x86 and x64 versions of each.
- DirectX Redist June 2010 (every WinOS needs this)
- .NET Framework 4.xx (via Windows Updates)
- GFWL Client > http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pc/DownloadClient

Once u install a game on Steam, go to game properties in Steam Library for it when it has completed and then click Local Files > Verify

After that exit Steam Client properly and then reboot Windows. Then launch Steam and try your game.

Set the FO3 game exe to run as Admin in the .exe properties where it is installed.

Okay first off, i have no idea what anything in that top paragraph meant, or how to act on that with my PC. Two, like i said, cannot install GFWL due to a repeated network error it givs me. Even so - how am i to reboot Windows? As in restart the computer? Sorry if i sound noobish, but this is a mostly console player who only lightly played PC trying to expand his horizon. Hate to say, but you'll have to be more specific with me.

Steam version doesn't require GFWL any more. Have you tried running the main executable manually (game properties>browse local files>fallout3.exe)?

I would try this guide and if it does not work, I would still delete everything and revert anything you may have changed then reinstall it fresh and follow the guide again.

Okay thanks for the upfront reply, and if i'm doing this right, i seem to be coming across an error that reads

"Fallout3.exe - Ordinal not found.
The Ordinal 42 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\windows\SYSTEM32\xlive.dll."

Which of course, have no idea what that means.

Yes i came aross that Ultimate Setup thing multiple times but it was no help tbh. Half i can't understand, and half is stuff i already tried.

Sounds like it still needs it for some reason, but fear not. Look for "Disable GFWL" or something like that on Nexus. Or even better, get a script extender, disables it as well.

If you are going the nexus route also install the unofficial patch at it fixes many bugs/errors.

xlive.dll?it has something to do with GFWL
u no need to open GFWL, but it needs to be installed. About the network error, how is that happens?Do u try to connect to the server?

Hey guys thanks for everything! The xlive.dll worked for me and its sad to know how long the issue was and how quick the solution was. My friend on Instagram helped me do it, but thanks for the support! :)
