Also may help to launch Steam via TCP instead of it's default UDP.
To do that simply add -tcp to your Steam shortcut's properties, so that it's like this for example: C:\Steam\Steam.exe -tcp
I have the same problem occasionally, although I'm pretty sure that you still have internet during that period and it doesn't have to do with the router. My guess is that it has to do with the game itself, as I have noticed no problems with any other games.
I find that games like Dayz and CS:GO do the same thing occasionally.
The router firewall is off by default. Do you know how to launch on TCP mode on OS X?
