8GB Free hard drive space needed to D/L 1.1Gb worth of data ??
Why does steam require so much free hard drive space to download some game updates ? Like for instance, i'm d/ling dark souls 2 DLC3 update right now, which the steam client states is apporx 1.1Gb Package. I have 8Gb free hard drive space prior to the download starting. But as soon as the download begins my free hard drive space suddenly drops to 49Mb ?? Then steam stops the download because of low hard drive space. Why is a 1.1Gb download eating up 8Gb of hard drive space ??

I don't know, but you may want to try using the TikiOne Steam Cleaner to clear out unneeded DirectX install packages.
This isn't the first time this has happened. The steam client has done this a few times before. So mush so to the point where I have actually needed to uninstall a whole game (around 8-15Gb) in order to get a 1-2Gb download to complete. Once the download is finished my hard drive space goes back to what is was before the download started + the extra space from the deleted game, and minus the size of the download. It's almost like the steam client needs working hard drive space as well as the actual data value of the download it'self. If that is the case, then that is highly inefficient.

Steam creates another copy of the files being updated while it downloads the update. So a couple hundred megabytes of small changes to a bunch of giant files can result in several gigabytes being used while it downloads them. You can watch this happen in the steamapps/downloading folder.

Oh, I see, then that explains alot. I did notice that there was a correlation between the amount of free hard drive space being used and the total size of the game files of the game being updated. Thank you Dendro, feel much better now that I understand what steam is actually doing and why it's behaving the way it is.
compression my dear friend. Half-Life 2 when you press download (I had no source games prior to the install) it said 8GB. On the downloads page, it said 2.0GB.
Do not fill your hard drive 100% up you end with the pc not will start at all
above 80% is already critical (saying otherwise then i dare you to do this)
