How do you define "Indie" well enough to make it an automated system?
The problem is when most people cry about wanting to filter "Indie" games they really want is to filter "Crappy" games.
Steam already has an Indie tag on all of them, so they are already defined. And you are correct about the crappy part, as most of the crappy or crappy-looking ones are already marked as Indie.
Rubbish.
There are loads of "non crappy" indie games, and there is no lack of "crappy AAA" titles to boot. The recent Assassain's Creed comes vividly to mind. The truth is that "crappy" is a subjective term and everyone has their own list of what is "crap" and what is good. Blind filtering anything marked "Indie" for example means you filter incredible games such as Killing Floor, Super Meaat Boy, Amnesia The Dark Descent, One Finger Death Punch, Legend Of Grimrock, Beat Hazard, Incredibe Adventures of Van Helsing, Don't Starve, Outlast, Torchlight 2, Serious Sam 3, and Binding of Isaac.
This whole "indie = crap" mentality is pretty weak.
You're right, there certainly is no lack of rubbishy AAA titles. However, I encounter far more Indie games that I would describe as rubbishy than AAA titles that I would describe as being rubbishy. Well, actually... to be fair what I tend to find with Indie games is that they sometimes have some very cool and innovative ideas but they tend to feel incomplete. Perhaps the devs have a tendency to get so caught up in the one new idea that they overlook everything else? That's a very general statement and is not always the case as on the very rare occasion I do find an Indie game that I enjoy. But it is what I tend to find personally.
I don't mean to disrespect you or your taste in games, but I personally disagree with your list of "incredible" Indie games. Except for perhaps Killing Floor, which I have invested many hours in. But back on topic, that's just it, this all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. Surely that's also what the filter system is about, so that we can more easily find games that are aligned with our own personal preference and with this in mind it makes sense that we should be able to filter out Indie games if we wish to. Especially since there is already a tag for Indie titles which would make this feature very easy to add.
It's fine if you disagree with my list of incredible indie games, I'm simply choosing some of the more highly rated and popular ones that I personally have played and so know about. There are plenty of other incredible indie games to choose from. I tend to find that most of my favourite games do in fact end up being indies. I don't see any problem with adding an "AAA" tag, but what I take issue with is the rampant attitude of "all indies are crap."
You're right about pre-orders, which is why I as a general rule never do pre-order anything. Also, I agree. Steam is now flooded with Indie titles. One could argue that although there are quite a number of shockingly disappointing AAA titles being released, there are still higher expectations of professional studios to release products that actually feel "complete" and from my experience large studios pull that off far more often than small Indie dev teams do. It's cool if you like Indie games more than AAA games in general and you're just as entitled to have that preference as myself and others are entitled to prefer AAA games instead.
Not all Indie games are crap, but such an overwhelming number of the ones that I have tried have been so crappy (to me) that I felt like I was diving headfirst into a sewer in the hope of finding a golden crown at the bottom when trying out games by Indie developers.
As this is my experience (I'm not trying to say it's like this for everybody), I feel like we need the option to filter out the Indie titles. We don't need a "AAA" tag, just the option to disclude games in the already existing "Indie" tag. This is a win/win as those who enjoy Indie games can continue to find them easily as they always have, whilst allowing the rest of us who don't tend to enjoy them to not be exposed to them in the marketplace.
^ This, basically.
