Can i change install location in steam for game that i have install?
Hi, need your help. I just recently buy new HDD and i want to change the location the installation folder for the game that i have install before without uninstall first, can I?

For example my witcher 2 now located in C, can i change it to D (the new HDD)?

Can i just cut and paste the steamapps in steam folder? Will there be any trouble if I do it?

Many thanks before.

Not directly, but it should be possible to do something like this (try it with a small game first):

  • If you haven't already done so, make a new library on the new drive. It probably has to be the first in the list to make Steam use it to install new games, or maybe there's a radiobutton for that.
  • Move the game out of the SteamApps/common/ folder to a place where Steam doesn't see it
  • Tell Steam to deinstall the game. Since you've moved it away, this will effectively just make Steam know that the game isn't there anymore, without actually deleting anything
  • Move the game into the new library location
  • Tell Steam to install the game. Since your new library is also the default location for new games, this SHOULD make Steam detect that it's already there, and it will merely validate it, and only download stuff that's missing/broken.

You might want to keep an eye on the savefiles -- make a backup somewhere. in case the deinstall deletes saves.

If you need something to help you move stuff then grab a copy of GameSave Manager - use it to back up your save data then use its Steam Spreader tool to move the game itself.

I can confirm that Kargor's method works although in step 2 you can just put the game files into the new library folder. This will save you time with larger games.

I had to move multiple games from my steam hard drive after i ran out of space and that is how I did it.
