Steam creating new firewall rules, ignoring changes
I am currently using Windows firewall. I was experiencing problems Steam crashing my internet connection, I went into the 2 windows firewall rules and changed a setting and this fixed my problem.

However the next time I close and re-launch Steam it creates 2 new rules inside windows firewall and it seems to be using these rules (and ignoring the ones I changed) as my original problem returns. If I change these new rules my problem is gone again and when I re-launch Steam it creates another 2 rules. I've had as many as 12 different rules for Steam inside windows firewall at once!

Steam is the only program I have installed that does this. Has anyone experienced this problem other than me?

How do I stop Steam from creating new rules and just use the existing ones with my changes applied?

You'd need to explain what rules steam is creating and what you are changing. That might give a clue WHY you need to change something at all. I've not seen this issue before... I suspect something else going on here.

Maybe try a free 3rd party firewalll to see if the problem is unique to windows firewall. Are you using the normal steam client or the beta?

Silicon Vampire: I'm changing the Edge Traversal rules under the advanced tab. It defaults to Block, i'm changing to allow. It creates 2 new rules with it blocked again. I've tried a lot of things to solve my original problem, this was the only one that works.

HLCinSC: I was hoping I might be able to avoiding using another firewall but I will if I have to. I'm using the normal client from a fresh install yesterday.

Yeah I just thought that may help determine if it is more of a steam vs. win firewall issue. good luck.

Thanks, I had assumed it was a Steam problem as I made similar changes to other rules for other programs such as iTunes and nothing similar happened.

i just found this thread after searching for "steam changing firewal rules" and this seems to be the only post relating to it. It happens to me too that steam is creating new firewall rules on its own, not regarding the changes i did.

I wonder why nobody is concerned about the real issue here.

HOW is steam able to do that? No program should EVER be able to create firewall rules on its own! Why bother using a firewall, when rules can be created at random?
Whenever I make a change to the firewall setting, theres a feedback wether i want that change or not. How comes steam can do these changes without being administrator and without me being noticed?.
