It is possible that the game uses a launcher (Origin or Battlenet, maybe?) -- you've added a shortcut to the launcher, the launcher starts the game, then quits itself. In such a case, Steam starts the launcher and sees it terminating, but it doesn't know that the "thing" that it was running wasn't the actual game.

yes using origin..
any bypass for this? surely most non steam games are from origin so steam haven't got any fix?

Close Origin (completely), then launch the game from Steam (the .executable of the game's inside the OriginGames -folder), launching the executable will re-open Origin keeping the status up.

If it still keeps on shutting the status off, turn off Origin's In-game overlay. (Although for me they work simultaneously [Dead Space 3, The Sims 4]; with Crysis 3 I had to turn off Origin's overlay.)

Oh yeah, and your status will hang as 'In-Game', until you turn off Origin again.

So turn it off when you launch the game, turn it off when you quit the game.

Since 2014, I've just ticked this box within Origin:
[Origin > Application Settings > Advanced]
    :correctamundo:
Automatically exit Origin after closing a game.

Also, kept this unticked
[Origin > Application Settings > Origin In-Game]
    _
    Enable Origin In Game

I only launch its games (and Origin) through the Steam -client library.

Much less of a hassle.

You can go to Steam and in the bottom left corner there is "+ Add a game". Click on that and select "Add a Non-Steam game". Next select the game you want to play.
