Cant delete secondary steam folder.
Okay, so as I said I cant seem to delete my secondary steam folder. Its not on a different hard drive, its just a separate folder for skyrim ( I was told its better to do this for the purpose of modding). However now that I've finished with it, I cant seem to delete it. I've tried deleting it through steam library folder settings but it says "Removing selected steam library folder failed" and if I just delete it though windows explorer it doesn't delete it as an option to install to in steam...

I realise that this might not seem like a big deal, but to us "neat/OCD" types this is huge.

Help me out here brahs.

Also necroing the thread with a fix for anyone searching still.

My issue happened because I deleted the .dll and steamapps folder(which was empty) before I tried to remove the library in Steam. Restarting Steam should repair it by adding back the .dll. That seems to be key for it to recognize it as a functioning Steam library and delete it properly through the settings > download menu.

Keep in mind when creating a new library for Steam games, it doesn't create it's own folder called Steam for you. You have to do that and select the folder as the library location. If you make the mistake of selecting, say, program files or a games folder, it will just start dumping the .dlls and steamapps folders etc. in that location as if it were a steam folder. This doesn't mean it will cause problems, but it will be very unorganized and can upset OCD people, or at worst cause confusion when you are trying to clean up your files. Better to keep everything organized.

A general rule is to never just randomly delete folders. If it's related to a program, most of the time there is an option to uninstall or delete it through the program itself or at least windows apps, and it won't always work if you manually deleted it. Stuff put in the documents folder is usually an exception, as it mostly just puts screenshots and occasionally game saves there, though that may be important to some people, but for everything else, try to go through proper channels first before just deleting stuff.

I uninstalled dota 2 and formatted my extra SSD where I had it installed. I tried reinstalling on the SSD but Steam could find the folder nor could it be removed from the Setting>Downloads>Steam Library section with an error popping up. I tried making another folder in the SSD but received "Selected drive already has a library folder. Steam will manage multiple games install in a single folder for you" .

This was solved by following this video

Essentially, close Steam, go to SteamApps> and open "libraryfolders.vdf" in WordPad

Delete the line of the particular directory you want removed and save. Hopefully this works for you too. GL

I just encountered the same issue, and the fix for me was to pause all Steam downloads (even though it was currently downloading to a different Steam library).

Turns out it's the same fix for the error 'Cant create folder'

Found a solution to this.

Change the drive letter of the hard drive which Steam won't recognise (e.g. from E to F). Restart Steam and the download folder should have disappeared.

I then changed the hard drive letter back to its original, restarted Steam, added the download folder and the issue was rectified.
This worked! These two solutions just saved me a world of trouble!

What happened to me was: I have a bad SATA port on my motherboard and forgot which one it was, fast forward after downloading a bunch of Steam games to my new storage drive it starts having 100% disk issues. I roll my eyes, open the case, swap ports, reformat the drive (possible file corruption anyways) and when I booted up Steam I couldn't get it to delete the old folder until reading these. Thank goodness for y'all.

"Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache" worked for me.

This worked for me.

In my case I had reformatted my secondary drive and Steam wouldn't download new games, even though I had recreated the folder. This option puts the necessary files back in the right folder, after which everything starts to work again.

So this works in two cases:

1) You want to delete the folder from Steam but can't.
2) You want to keep using the same location but recreated the folder manually.

Thanks Guys It's work for me too :)

This worked for me today. Changed it drive letter to (F:), restarted Steam, the library folder disappeared. Changed it back to original (for me it was E:), restarted Steam, the library folder reappeared, but this time it actually let me remove the library folder. Then it let me make a new one in the location I really wanted it in.

So, to get around it i formatted it to another letter so now E: is off the table to be used on steam cause i cant get rid of the file since it no longer exists
