redeeming a possibly old cd key question.
I did look to the list of games that steam says that you can redeem as far as cd keys but I was hoping maybe there was a way around it. I have Fable : The lost chapters from a while back when it came out. Like the old case and 4 cds. I can easily install the game using them but then I would have to use the cd just to play it. I still have its original cd key and was hoping I could redeem it here. Is it even possible?

You're probably talking about this list, fable isn't listed.

I tried the same thing with COD Modern Warfare (Retail version), no luck. After a few days I've received a negative response from support, basicly saying that it's up to the publisher. If the game has steamworks, that's a different story. (MW2 + later)

Only the games listed above (Retail) can be activated on steam. Recently Bohemia Interactive allowed all Arma 2 retail owners to register their CD keys on steam. This is a dev/publishers decision.

If you truly want this, I suggest sending the original creators an email.

Well, the list isn't 100% accurate either, as it misses out certain titles (like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Rome: Total War) but for the most part it's accurate.

Not saying it's accurate, that's why I've tried to submit my COD MW key to steam support. I knew it wasn't listed, but I've gave it a try anyway. Would be nice if support added the game Probably with a digital new CD key. It's still a dev/publishers decision (Activision in my case)

Thanks for the replies. It does seem pretty hopeless since the anniversary version is coming out. Plus the origonal goes for $9.99. Maybe one day theyll let me. Until then, cds it is...

Yeah, it's outdated. Trying it should be the safest way, but it doesn't guarantee that you can detect all possible conversions.

For example, Borderlands has recently gotten a "granting tool" that looks at your retail DVD, and registers the game on Steam if it likes what it sees. These DVDs don't even have a CD key that you could possibly enter (DLC codes have been added to Steam, but those don't include the game itself).

It also appears that the Batman Arkham Asylum conversion didn't quite get all the keys, so people have been asked to contact Warner Games support directly. Just entering a key into the Steam window isn't going to reveal such cases either.

In general, it would be nice if Steam would take the time and update the page. Maybe even add a mechanism that increases the likelihood of new information actually getting added there, like providing publishers with a way to setup their piece of information within the game data on Steam, and having that support page collect all those fragments automatically.

There might even be a sale. I have the occasional old game on Steam that I also have on CDs... so who cares. Most of these I didn't even buy intentionally, they just came through a bundle of some sort. I don't think I ever bought one "on its own", but some old games have been instrumental in making me buy the bundle they were part of, as in "Oh, this includes Enclave, and the price is ok, so I'll get that. What else is in the bundle? No idea, don't care".

I happened across an old half-life cd, complete with the key. Can I redeem it on Steam?

Holy necro, Batman. Yes, why don't you try it?
