There are no users that match your search ---- how do i fix this?

I'm trying to find a friend but he doesn't exist (according to steam anyways) and its the same for him. is there some way i can fix this? or is something else the problem?

Are you searching for his username or his display name? You want to search for the second one. You could also send him a link to your profile and have him add you via a link there, or vice versa.

You would send them your profile link:

And there's a button to "Add friend" on that page. You would either send your link to them, or they send their link to you.

i was using the 'Add a Friend' button and searching for him that way but couldn't find him. what do i do from there?

The link I posted above is a direct link to you, personally. Clicking "Add friend" there will add you specifically to their friend's list. The same is true if they give you their profile link.

That's just the number Steam uses to identify you, unless you choose a custom URL. Since Steam doesn't want others to know your username, and your display name can change at any time, Steam uses those numbers.

Does your friend have a Steam level of 0? Most likely their account is limited. They would need to make a purchase directly from Steam, or complete a microtransaction in a Steam game, or redeem a gift bought on Steam. Or you could add them. Limited users can't add friends, but other users (not limited users) can add them.
