Why can't I add my friend who just made an account?
I am a paying steam user and think it's a bit stupid that I can't add an account I created for my friend.

You used to be able to add accounts by account name. It didn't need to be done through the steam community. I know it's just a couple of extra steps to get the account onto the steam community but the extra hassle puts alot of ppl off registering.

Edit: I know stopping accounts from adding people is stopping bots but the point of this thread is I'm a paying user and should be able to add a free account, it promotes the community

People who bought games and other stuff on Steam can add people, the search system is not good at finding newly created accounts or accounts with no games on it (F2P games too) you could also say that is slow at updating for soooo many accounts that gets created everyday.

I also think you could add people by email? anyway they changed it to display names.

I haven't checked but I hope you don't need to make a purchase to be on the steam community. That would be awful.

It's to limit the spammers and phishing

Yup, you need to buy something on Steam (or redeem a gift that was purchased on Steam) to add friends. Activating a key used to work, but they changed it because people were abusing free giveaways on other websites to activate bot accounts. For example, this game:

The point I'm making is I should be able to add these limited accounts as I am a full user. I think valve is right to stop new accounts from adding people though.

You should be able to add him if you visit his profile? Tell him to send you a link.

He has to make a profile first? Which is annoying cuz it wasn't like this before.

How was it before?
I can go to your profile http://steamcommunity.com/id/superthing and add you.

You could type in their account name and it would come up, it wasn't linked to the steam community. Also I think you were right when you said you could add them through email too.

In the last year they completely changed the interface for adding friends.

Send this link to your friend: http://steamcommunity.com/my/
Have him log in if he needs to.
He should end up on his profile, if he does not have one set up make him do that.
After he ends up at his profile have him send the link back to you and then you visit his link, log in if you need to and then send him a friend request.
He might have to visit http://steamcommunity.com/my/home/invites/ to see your friend request.
Then he accepts and then you are done.

Now we have so many bot accounts spam out phishing links and viruses so they ruin it for all of us. But there are worse hassles in life.

If valve are going to appeal to casual gamers they make this a little easier. I mean more steps to register means less chance people will register

It isn't that hard to register. The bots and phishers got to the point to where they had to do something. It isn't that much of a hassle.

well if my friend abandoned the idea of installing steam on his laptop it is obviously a hassle
supertrooper225 Feb 3, 2015 @ 11:21am
That is his problem. All you have to do to register an account and friend people is make an account and buy a game. Not...difficult. Yes. You have to pay for stuff every now and again.

If valve are going to appeal to casual gamers they should find another solution to combating bots and phishers that doesn't affect me.
Steam is not made with people who doesn't spend money in mind, it started as a store for buying stuff. This free2play is a new thing. Asking someone to spend some money is not that much to ask.

If you are playing for free they will make it a bit more of a hassle so that paying customers doesn't get scammed by people who can make 1000 accounts who can send 1000 friend requests in an hour. Seems fair to me.

Now this is the thing, I was going to put paid games on their account to play with me. This isn't a thing about them playing f2p games

Send him a gift to his email adress, he clicks the link and activates the game and problem solved. He is now unlimited, easy as pie. You don't need to be friends for that.
