Xbox One 2 people 2 controllers 1 game - how many keys?
Hi

I've never used or seen a console, always done PC games so I'm a complete noob on consoles.

I'm thinking of buying an Xbox One but I can't see how it will work on digital games despite reading tons of Googled articles. Hope someone can help.

If me and my wife buy one Xbox One and...

Two controllers...

And we have 2 gamertag accounts on that X1...

Can we enter the same multiplayer / co-op game on the same console?

If we do, how many games / game codes or product keys etc will we need to pay for?

How will it look? Will there be a split screen so that we can each see our own character?

Be grateful for any info. TIA

You can play the game with any gamertag you log into on your enabled Xbox. You don't need to buy extra keys or discs to play with other players.

Thanks for your reply - I may not have been very cleaer about the exact question - basically...

If me and my wife want to play a game at the same time AND on the same console then...

(1) Is it possible?
(2) Do we have to buy the game twice (to get two product keys)?

When we play a co-op game on PC, we have to have 2 PCs and 2 copies of the game - but what I've read re Xbox 1 is really ambiguous, it SEEMS that:

(a) We only need to buy the game once.
(b) We can play together on one X1 console (obviously one controller each).
(c) We can be in the same game (of course) onn that one console.
(d) I think we'd get a split-screen on the TV for each of our characters.

I hope I'm making sense, apologies for any confusion - but as I say, I know nothing about consoles.

It's game dependant. There are games like Double Dragon Neon that simply let two people play at the same time on the same screen, while others require you play against people on Xbox Live. Generally you want to look for the term "local co-op".

To make things slightly easier, I did some Google searching and found a site that lets you search for games on the Xbox One that feature local co-op/multiplayer.

http://www.co-optimus.com/system/24/xbox-one.html

Hopefully that helps.

It's just like on PCs -- games might have local/couch coop, which means you just plug in more controllers.

It's actually more common on consoles than it is on PCs, since consoles are meant to be hooked up to your living room TV, so there's usually just one.

Thanks guys, that helps. So if we wanted to play something like Dark Souls (I know it's probably not a Xbox 1 game, just an example) or a MMO like Wow and play together in the same game... we'd need two consoles?

If that's the case then we may as well play on PC (since we already have them).

MOST games are geared towards multi console play. You will need an active xbox live account to be able to play games online. Something like halo master chief collection you can split screen on one console. Just depends on the devs for each particular game.

Thanks, in a way that's a shame but at least we know. I dout that we'd want to buy two consoles (and wouldn't wantt to be playing in two rooms on two TVs either) so we may as well stick with the PCs, since we need them anyway.

Glad we cleared that up before spending the money.

I bought Dark Souls the other day though and it seems to need game controllers so I thought about spending the money on the Xbox while I'm at it. Doesn't seem such a good idea now though. A pity that the controlers are so expensive, although the older Xbox 260s are cheaper tehy're probably not as good.

We could get the PS4 controllers though, they seem to get a good write-up.

You only need one game to play multiplayer with your wife on the same console at the same time. Consoles have always been like that. And the Xbox has each controller set a user. You log in with your gamertag when you connect your controller, and she hers.

You don't have to have multiple copies just to have multiple players on a multiplayer game.

Select muliplayer modes on what ever game you are trying to play.
Play.

Simple as that.

The other worry is about cross-platform co-op / multiplayer. I've seen a few people complaining that some games only allow you to "see" other players who are on the same platform (Xbox, PC PS4 etc). A lot of the stuff I was reading seemed to be quite old, written when the XB1 first came out, but if we bought just one XB1 intending for the other person to play on a PC... can we be sure that we'd be able to get in the same game that way?

Is that down to the devs of individual games to decide or is it a Xbox-wide decision that Microsoft have already decided?
TirithRR Feb 1, 2015 @ 4:56am
Cross platform play is limited, normally by the platform. Microsoft doesn't want Sony users playing with them, etc. Some BS about "security issues" in the past (like with Destiny). And like Final Fantasy XIV, Microsoft didn't get it on their system, rumors of the same (didn't want Xbox players playing with Sony and PC players).

Cross platform play is rare. Some games have it, but most do not. If you have a Call of Duty game on the PS4, you are playing with other PS4 players only. If you are playing on an Xbox, it's with Xbox players only. PC Players play with PC Players only. That's just the nature of the beast.

Ahhh. That seems to say something different to DrknMonkey's post. If what you say is right, that would make all the difference - instead of being a bad idea to buy the XB1 it would then be a very good idea.

It's a bit of a problem getting two completely opposing views though :(

That's because it depends on the game. Games can have "local" multiplayer, they can have online-multiplayer, none of these, or both. There is no answer that's correct for every game.

Local multiplayer probably has the same limitations as on PC, though. If I start a game with local multiplayer, plug in another controller, and somebody else plays with me, and we get an achievement -- well, I'll get the achievement. Steam doesn't know about that other guy, so he doesn't get it.

A console is no magic way to play all games with 2 people on 1 game at once.
To clear that up.
Some may have splitscreen local coop.
