Steam will only open in Big Picture
For a while now I have not been capable of opening Steam unless its in Big Picture mode. I will activate steam and it will be open in my task bar but no matter what I do I cannot open steam unless I right click steam in my task bar and activate Big Picture mode. It is really annoying to me because I don't know how to do everything I want to do in Big Picture mode.

Have you exited BS mode? Otherwise it will do as you describe.

  • Close Steam.
  • Right-click the Steam shortcut and choose "Properties".
  • In the "Target" field, after the file path add "-nobigpicture"
  • Click "OK"
  • Launch Steam

Does it work normally now?

Sorry it took me a while to answer but no it does not work normally now. I cannot even open Steam at all anymore. It shows in my Task bar but that is all.
There's a couple of solutions in this post (I wouldn't resort to system restore as suggested in the first post, but there are two other solutions posted):

These solutions did not effect my situation at all that I know of. They were directed to people who's Steam closed as soon as it opened, mine does not do that, it simply will not open on my screen outside of my task bar.

There might be some confusion about this. I do not have my Steam shortcut in my Task bar. When i activate Steam it is sent to my Task bar because it is now actively running on my PC but does not open on my background so I can access any of the options.

I have the solution. I have the same problem. If you are running windows go into settings go into display, and under multiple displays. Chose only one display. Then when you do this click on steam and it should run fine. But this may only be for people with monitor.

I'm having the same problem as well and for the multiple displays fix all it says is detect displays under it. I would really like to know how to fix this, because the normal display is so much better than big picture.
