Game screens only update after Alt-Tab & back; halp?
I have a Surface Laptop 3 (Intel Core i5-1035G7, Intel Iris Plus graphics, 8GB ram) running Windows 11 Home 24H2. I have accounts for myself and my kids on this machine. This used to run Steam games fine, but for at least the last several months, if I run Steam in one account, even without running any games, then sign out of the account, into another account, and run any game, it only updates the screen for 1 frame and then stops. The game itself keeps running, and each time I alt-tab away and back, I can see one up-to-date frame. The first run after rebooting usually runs normally. I ran the Windows Reset process last week to see if something was corrupted, but I still have the same symptoms.

Any ideas how to diagnose or fix it?

There are several possible reasons why game screens only update after pressing Alt-Tab and returning, and how to fix them:
Outdated graphics card drivers. You need to visit the graphics card manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download the latest drivers for your model.

Incorrect power saving settings. You need to go to "Control Panel" > "Hardware and Sound" > "Power Options" and select a plan that prioritizes performance over energy efficiency.

Conflicts between the game and the operating system. It is worth checking whether the graphics settings in the game match the settings on the desktop.

Viruses and malware. It is necessary to scan the system with antivirus software.

Incorrect display settings configuration. You can try to disable the optimization of full-screen mode of programs.
Too many running programs. It is worth closingAll unnecessary programs and processes that may consume operating system resources.

Overheating of the computer. Make sure that the computer is properly ventilated, and if necessary, clean the fans and vents from dust.

If the problem persists, it is recommended to seek assistance from a professional or technical support team from the manufacturer of the graphics card or operating system.
