Copy games from USB-C SSD to new desktop
I just finished setting up my first desktop PC. Before this, I was gaming on a laptop with a 2TB external SSD I used for games that required/recommended being installed to SSD drives. I want to copy my game installs from the drive to my new desktop, but keep the installs on the drive as well because I will still be using the laptop as a portable rig. Is it as easy as copying the contents of `steamapps` folder on drive to the same folder on new PC drive?

First make sure there's already a Steam library on the new drive, then just merge the steamapps folder from your old HDD to your new PC, restart Steam and your games should show as installed.

  1. Connect both computers to same network.
  2. Leave the external SSD connected to the laptop.
  3. Start the Steam client on both computers and sign into account.
  4. On both computers, go to Steam -> Settings -> Downloads and enable "Game File Transfer over Local Network."
  5. Keep laptop running with Steam client idle.
  6. Install desired games as you normally would on the desktop computer. Steam should show a blue banner indicating local transfer of files.
