This behavior is not an issue if you use a different browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, as the default. Because then Microsoft ignores this setting and leaves it be.
Steam games are started using the steam:// protocol. And the protocol handling is what gets reset because of an Edge update if Edge is the default browser.
Not meaning to be rude... but I asked "why it hasn't been resolved?" not "why it happens?".
I understand why it happens, thank you for your time and explanation though.
When PC user do not understand OS and steam work together, it will end like this.
ps.
Stop use windows desktop , use steam over collection and cover lauch, other game laucher already do this.
EA , Ubisoft and Blizzard , they use game cover icon to start games and so will other do sson.
And steam will not fix Big icon, or old games from the past that missing them.
There is no way you can show 500 games windows icon without make folder for them, so it already a outdated show my dame list through windows icon.
and ppl here forget thats is ppl with 1k to 5k games, that list in a folder will be awfull.
Steam is literally the only one with this problem.
If the other companies can do it, Steam can too.
Steam COULD fix this by changing the way they implement shortcuts.
This problem is over a decade old.
There are solutions, they aren't implementing them.
I most certainly understand computers... I understand what an Operating System is... I understand that Steam operates within an OS under the restrictions of the OS... FFS I build my own desktop computers... stating that the "PC user do not understand"?... I understand very well thank you, you're making the situation out to be something it isn't.
BUT
... I can't even understand the point you're trying to make...
I didn't "do" anything other than create a "desktop shortcut" as a feature which is available through Steam's interface...
I didn't do anything other than use a feature that is built into Steam and that feature is flawed.
How is creating a desktop-shortcut, via Steam's own options as a built in feature, the "pc users own mistake"?
As well, never start a comment with "the OP won't like this/read this" it makes you sound like a jerk.
(the lack of understanding in the responses is breaking my brain).
During my 36 years of sitting at a computer almost daily, Steam is the ONLY time I've EVER had an issue with "desktop-shortcuts"...
I understand that Steam is utilising "internet links" for their desktop-shortcuts...
I understand that the issues are directly related to "explorer" which is a Window's thing...
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!
I will state again that in 36 years...
STEAM IS THE ONLY TIME I HAVE EVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH DESKTOP-SHORTCUTS.
Resolving this IS Steam's problem.
While the issues with "internet links" isn't their problem.
BUT, for example, Steam's resolution could be... Don't use "internet links"...
In 36 years I have LITERALLY not had this issue with any other store front or programs pertaining to implementing "desktop-shortcuts".
It isn't Steam's responsibility to fix "explorer" or "internet links"...
It IS Steam's responsibility to fix a feature within Steam which does not work.
So... maybe... they... shouldn't... be... utilising, "internet links"... for this feature!
cya
Steam uses ".url" as shortcuts.
EVERYONE else uses ".lnk".
CYA!
only a handfull of people even use desktop shortcuts cause its pretty pointless feature to begin with when you can just launch and manage your games in the steam client.
its also quiet easy to just find all the exe files in your library directory and make manual shortcuts
or keep a .reg file of the key thats responsible for the icons to work
It worked perfectly for 22 years. Then Microsoft causes issues.
Microsoft is the troublemaker, not Steam.
