There's some other minor concerns with the drive becoming unplugged while in use, naturally that would cause problems any time the unavailable drive needs to be accessed.
Some tips that can help:
Try to make sure the drive is mounted before Steam starts up.
Do not unplug it until Steam is shut down.
Since it is a SSD, I'm assuming it doesn't have a sleep function but if there's at any point that it hibernates while Steam is running, it will cause some issues.
