A Chinese hacker got into my account and refunded $110 worth of my games. The hacker even submitted a ridiculous refund request in Chinese, and Steam accepted it right away. Then they used the $110 to buy items in a game called DOTA 2. They listed a $0.01 item for $110 and bought it using my account. It’s clearly money laundering, but Steam just says they can’t refund me. My computer is clean from malware, and I had Steam Guard enabled. I’m disgusted.

Okay.

If that was the plan from the start, why bother buying Steam games? Just hack everything and make money.

There are no hackers, only hijackers by having you leak your data somewhere.

Follow all these instructions, otherwise you can't be sure that no one is still on your account:

1. Scan for malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/
2. Check that the email and phone number on the Steam account are still yours.
3. Deauthorize all other devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
4. Change passwords from a trusted/clean device.
5. Generate new backup codes for your Mobile App https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
6. Revoke the API key https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey (there should be nothing in the APIKEY)

There are only 3 ways for others to get into your account:

1. You either got infected and had malware steal your active session, which means steam thinks it is your own doing. (Or you logged in on another infected machine)

2. You entered your login + Steam Guard code somewhere you were not supposed to. (Scanning the QR code to login does the same)

3. Someone else has/had physical access to your devices. (Or you forgot to logout after being in an internet café etc.)

You can't deny all 3 of these, it's impossible to get into your account otherwise.

Stolen wallet or items that way will not be refunded, as it is the users responsibility to make sure their accounts are safe.

No, there’s no malware. I’ve only logged in from my home computer, and I’ve set up Steam Guard. Why is it the victim’s responsibility?

How would you feel if all the games you own got deleted or your account got permanently banned, and people just told you it’s entirely your fault? Would you just accept it and move on? Seriously?
It is your responsibility to keep your account secure.

Too many people were pretending "I got hacked" so they could bug Steam Support to give them their stuff back.
You have the tools to make sure nobody can get into your account, you're expected to know how to use them.

Alright, if you’re going to blame the victim like that, I hope a hacker deletes your account too.

I keep my account secure. And again, there are no 'hackers.'

Yeah, I already had Steam Guard enabled. But don’t you think it’s suspicious that a refund request was made in Chinese when that’s not even my native language? Steam didn’t question it at all—they’re just handling things stupidly without checking properly.

If this kind of hacking happens often, they should fix it. Instead, they’re ignoring the problem, and more cases like mine keep happening.

Alright, let’s say there are no hackers—then if your account gets compromised, who did it? It’s just your fault for not being careful enough, right?

Exactly. You should be more careful handling your account information in the future.
