Steam Gift card

I recently purchased a steam gift card. The store I get it from is called Game stop. They don't give you a physical card. They give you a receipt saying you purchased it and the activation code is at the bottom. I have purchased it this way in the pass and no problems. The code did not work and so I called the store and they said. We can't help you, contact steam. So I did and they said. since it's not an actual card. They can't help me, and to go back to the store. Now I'm out $50.00 any advise?

What is the error message you are getting when you try to redeem the code?
In general the store who sold you the card is responsible if the product is not working right.

It gives several reasons. for example wrong code for one.

The code may be invalid. Please carefully verify the characters as you re-enter the code and double check to see if you've mistyped your key. I, L, and 1 can look alike, as can V and Y, and 0 and O.
The code may not yet have been activated. It may take several hours after time of purchase before activation is completed by your retailer, please wait and try redeeming the code again in a little while.
If the currency of the code you are attempting to redeem is different than the region in which you are located, you may not be able to redeem this gift card to your account. If this is the case please return this code to the retailer where it was purchased.
If the problem persists, please contact Steam Support for further assistance.

Take the receipt back to Gamestop and explain the issue. If they say it's activated, contact Steam Support.

Has anyone got a steam card from Game Stop? and they gave you a receipt and not a card, If so. did the receipt say activated?
