No card drops after redeeming a game with a key

I just got a new game which has trading cards using a retail CD key and it say I have no card drops available for this game
What could be the problem and how to fix it?

- previously I have redeemed another game with a key and it had card drops working fine
- my friend redeemed the same game I am redeeming now and he has card drops for it on his account

Did you use different kinds of keys? Keys that were sold through humble bundle will definitely give drops, while keys that were given out for free would not, when activated. Could be that your CD key is too old and was for a game without carddrops or somethin. Hard to tell how they divide it exactly.

Me and my friend got keys almost simultaneously for the same game on the same website (totally legit), and he has drops but I don't

So I thought something could be wrong with my account, but previously I got another key for another game on that same website and it had card drops

Indeed, I have many games on my account via key activation and they dropped cards. Same with gifted games... Dont' listenb to that one!

That is not accurate. Key redeemed and gifted games will both grant card drops if that game has cards.

It would help to know which game and what "totally legit" site you got the key from.

Just because you acquired the game via a key it doesn't mean its a retail key. Giveaways on other websites/platforms can be in the form of Steamkeys and as they're free keys they wouldn't drop tading cards.

Basically its not about deleting/restoring a game per se, its just doing so will refresh your games list and can help in drops registering again.
You can reach the same effect with buying a new game since that also refreshes your games list but the above method is definitely cheaper.

Nope. If the game is free on Steam it won't drop cards

OK, then. He'll refresh his game list and his game will strart dropping cards right?

Valve stopped all free games from dropping cards, If he goes and looks at his account details the activation will say free or complimantary not retail. None of them drop cards reagrdless of where they were obtained from.

Ok, looks like it was a glitch or something, cus now it shows the drops are available. Took it like 8 hours to fix itself tho
