Weird directx/first install problem

So for some reason whenever I try to install a new game it gets stuck on installing directx, my system locks up and I have to hold my power button to turn it off since its so slow. But for some reason certain games run, for example payday 2 and bioshock 2 when i click play the message pops up about steam making changes to the system, and I click no, because my pc will freeze up but those games still go on, but for other games if i click no nothing happens. Thanks for your time.

Some games can run on older versions of DirectX which is why hitting "No" works. As for it freezing welcome to the Windows OS. How long has it sat their frozen before you restart the computer? I know when DirectX installs it like to freeze the computer for awhile (I've had it freeze for a few seconds to ~20 minutes depending on which computer I am using).

It would unfreeze after about 20-25mins, but then say error initialization or something like that, I tried installing directx again, but same thing happened after about 20 mintues initialization. The freezing is in correlation to the disk usage which would shoot up to 100% which even when installing the actual game/browsing on chrome never goes that high. Btw this is windows 8.1.

I would make sure your graphic card is compatible with whatever version of DirectX you're trying to install.

I think i got it I had to install the directx upgrade package, I was trying to run castle crashers as as admin from the folder but I was missing a d3 file, i looked around for it and found it was an upgrade package thing from microsoft so i figured whatever, downloaded it and castle crashers and don't starve my two test games worked fine, i even tested installing the directx on super meat boy, and my computer didn't freeze up it actually finished downloading. Thank you for help though :D

Dang looks like I spoke too soon, i tired doing the first tiem setup for cs go, and my system locked up again, had to restart, but thatm ight be some weird ocnflict since if I click no, I'm able to play the game. Also I tried doing dfirst time setup for metal lsug x and after 20 mins it actually finished, but my system still slowed down 100% disk usage. I then saw this windows modules installer which was taking up a lot of disk usage, and i ended it, but it still kept coming back, so i figured I would just restart my computer again, but at least this time I was able to ctrl alt delete and do it that way. Oh I just tried playing metal slug x, the game the directx install actaully finished, it still asks me to isntall directx. I ugess to play steam games Ijust have to reemeber to lcick no, when it asks about steam changing the system.
