Call of Duty 4 Retail Key Activation

Hi good people. Couldn't find anything about this so i'm starting a thread. Don't want to be a nuisance, hope to resolve this quickly. Thanks in advance.
I just dug up my old retail copy of Cod4:MW. Imagine my incredible delight when i saw that it's in the list of CD keys that can be activated on steam. Here's the problem, though: On the CD key help page , however, it says that the key must be entered in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7
However, the only code in my copy is 5 sets of 4 digits. Doesn't work:(
Does anybody know what to do? Perhaps it's another code?

I don't think the code is for Steam. Is there something on the box that says you need Steam?

Only retail CD-keys of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year Edition can be activated on Steam. Other versions must send proof to Steam Support for activation.

Thanks! how does one send proof? can i also do this for other games? I have a copy of Rockstar's Bully on disc, could i perhaps send that to support as well?

Yep. It's always nice to add them all to a digital library. Beats rummaging through the back of the wardrobe each time.

Edit: Well you can send them a photo of the retail copy with the key on it and match it with receipt of when you bought it if you can so they know it is yours etc. It may just be okay with the photo though since it is old. You're basically having to show them it's legitimately bought by you and that you own it.

Well sh!t, i got it in 2007, when it came out. Didn't even have steam then. I've moved 4 times since then.
Would they take it without the receipt?

You can do it with the CD key you have at the moment as it states here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601 which I guess you've already checked.

I don't mean use it as a Steam key. It is not a Steam key. You are meant to show it to Steam, take a picture of it with your retail copy of the game and send it to them via support. They will check it and most likely give you a steam key to use on your account.

Sometimes you may be unluckier and get an support employee who is not too helpful but as long as you give them all the proof of purchase you can give in a clear manner and make your query clear, they will do their best to reply. It'll take a few days to a few weeks so send in the ticket and forget about it until a reply pops up in your email account. Good luck.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I have the same issue. I recently received the retail version of CoD 4 MW GOTY as a gift, and activating it on Steam with just the CD key didn't work. I cannot seem to find a way to contact Steam support in order to send them proof. Is it still possible to activate this way?

Also, the second reply says that the GOTY retail version should activate without proof, and I can't find any other info about whether it should work.

No. Modern Warfare can not be activated on Steam. Modern Warfare 2 and newer can be activated on Steam, or better, must be activated on Steam.
