As for earning cards and stuff, www.google.com and search for Steam trading cards FAQ.
Cards go for a couple of cents, around ten or so per card. It's IMHO worth it, but its your choice!
Even if you did include them though you might push into the mid $3 range. As far as is it worth it, *shrugs* depends on the person, cards don't sell for much typically, but it sounds like you're in a situation where every bit counts.
Any one game gets 1/2 of the drops available by playing. So you will only ever get a handful of cards that are available to drop. Once they've dropped, you don't get anymore unless you buy them or you are picked for a 'booster pack'
