Is there a way to keep my games up to date like it used to work?
Frankly I don't think it's acceptable for steam to just decide what needs updating and what doesn't. The whole point of digital distribution is that it's up to date. If I have to update almost any game I want to play when I want to play it. I have limited time, and because steam deems I don't play these games often enough it doesn't update them, so in the limited time I have I often lose a large chunk of time to a game having to update. I paid for the game, keep it up to date, Steam is always running, my computer is always on, there is no reason it should not be keeping things up to date.

There's a global setting for when to update, AND you can set it on individual games to either follow the global setting or something else. Launching the game WILL make it check and will force it to update if its not current. The other settings will help update when you're not in-game.
