I wasnt able to install Steam on Mac OS X 10.14: Downloading the DMG file, then opening it, it showed "updating" then immediately closed.

Upon starting Steam again, I got the error "Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again."

I tried editing the etc/hosts to add an IP for client-download.steampowered.com , to no avail.

What fixed it:

Getting a recent "update_hosts_cached.vdf" File and placing it in

/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS/update_hosts_cached.vdf

This worked for me too. Rebooted into my new macOS, copied the file back into the old version’s volume, rebooted into 10.14 and Steam worked. Thanks very much!
