display name changed
it's been a few hours, but even after reading the community guidelines and searching the forums, i can't figure out why my name history was erased and why my display name was converted to my steam id. i think i've been falsely reported. i contacted support and am waiting to hear back.

as far as i am aware, my display name did not break the rules.

i have never gotten in trouble on steam before so this was a shock.

Yes, it is a very common meaning for that abbreviation. I hope you now understand why the profile name was reported and acted on,

If you're not getting any warnings from support, and if you think someone on your account do all 5 steps asap.
1. Scan for malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/

2. Deauthorize all other devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

3. Change passwords from a clean computer.

4. Generate new backup codes https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

5. Revoke all API keys, there should be none.

Here tips, and examples to help you give an ideal of types of scams, and phishing attacks that happens online daily that people can fall for, doesn't matter if you think it won't happen to you, it can happen if not paying attention, as some are very good tricks.

Here are the most common reason people get accounts hijack for any service really are as followed.
- Sharing account infomation with others. <--- Very common with impersonators, pretending to be Steam admin / support.
- Logging in on phishing sites. <--- Very common with skin gambling sites.
- Downloading / Installing Virus / Keylogger on your system.
- Using public devices that has keyloggers, such as cyber cafe, school computers, and etc...
- Storing your login credentials on a unsecured service that others has access to view.
- Using same login credentials for all your things, or using same login credentials on another service that had a data leak. Yes it does matter because even if it not related to Steam, if using same login credentials, hijackers will try to use those credentials to see what services you use with those credentials. https://haveibeenpwned.com/

https://youtu.be/9TRR6lHviQc

The type of story scammers say to you.

- "Hey vote for my team", and they link you a phishing site link, and try get you to login.

- "Hey I can't add you, please add me", and they try to start their scam with you.

- If you're friend with someone that got their account hijacked, you get scam message like, "I report you", "you been banned", and whatever to try scare you, and they tell you to trade your items to them, or if you have a login to phishing site may have a API key on account that redirect trades, they ask you to give them money, or etc...

- If you already got your account compromise by them, they change your display name to banned, or whatever, your display picture as well, they may delete your friends, and try to spend your wallet funds if you have any, also trade all your items, but if they see if you have mobile authenticator attached, they play their scam to get you to confirm the trade to get your items off your account to their account quicker if they're able to trick you into confirming the trade.

I show you few examples.

If you're not getting any warnings from support
i did get a warning but it just links to the community guidelines
it didn't actually say why my name was removed which is why i contacted support
i'm positive that it's just an error or misunderstanding

i've been on steam for a long time and already know ab scams / highjacking

that's not what's going on here

Your profile name was reported and a support employee agreed with the report. Using the abbreviation for "kill yourself" as your profile name was obviously seen as not appropriate.
Use something less ... edgy.

Using the abbreviation for "kill yourself"
omg, WHAT?!
in the circles i'm in, it's always meant ' keep yourself safe '
i didn't want to type out the whole phrase because i wanted to match having a 3 letter name with some of my friends.

this is extremely unfortunate
i would never have a name like that on purpose, honest
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

there are multiple meanings for the term. with my friends, we are legitimately wishing the other person well. i will have to ask if using it this way is specifically because of the more common meaning tho. i can see why the mods took action. that is obviously a horrible thing to say to anyone. having an angry looking avatar probably does not help my case.

this really is an unfortunate coincidence, as hard as that is to believe.

anyway, thank you for explaining.

i will be a lot more careful and double check things in the future.

I wish, due to issue where it commonly used for many years by toxic users across social media, to gaming which it commonly accepted that what people meant when they use said acronym, It's always good idea to do little google search just incase there something didn't know what something might mean if someone playing a prank on you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezawPHPKs9M

But funny enough, sometimes the said acronym can be used to refer to things in things such as games, or what not to help shorten a post, or speech.

i have actively avoided ever seeing a single full episode of rick & morty
i am going to continue this trend.

But funny enough, sometimes the said acronym can be used to refer to things in things such as games, or what not to help shorten a post, or speech.

i looked into it more and found. . .not great things
however, i also found the meaning that i explained before
sometimes, it was ironic which is. . .extremely depressing

why wouldn't you want to truly wish someone well?
all anyone has to do is search my post history and know that i'm not a toxic gamer type
i don't really play multiplayer games, watch twitch or youtube, or really talk to anyone who would purposely use the abbreviation to mean what a toxic player would

' killing you softly ' is also another meaning.
it's a popular song lyric.

i'm never abbreviating anything in my display name again.

Don't be too harsh on yourself. Others have made similar or even worse mistakes.

Ever heard of the car manufacturer Ford? One of the biggest and oldest companies to date.
They made a neat little car named Pinto. It was rather successful, so they wanted to export this affordable car to South America.

What they didn't know, that in Brazil Portuguese, the word Pinto has the meaning of tiny male genitalia.
It is of no surprise the car didn't sell well and was shortly renamed for that market and sold under the name Corcel.

Happens to everyone. I think they either know how to trigger the ban bot or they manipulated the moderator that isn't a professional at doing their job when the user they reported didn't do anything wrong while the offender who false-report got you banned and continues to do more damage and chaos.
Edit: lol I saw what link they put in. it wasn't the name, Steam doesn't have a way to remove someone's suspicious custom Steam Profile Link.

honestly, considering what the more common usage is, i think i got a slap on the wrist.
anyone who purposefully has a display name like that deserves a blanket ban.

maybe it's because i've never been flagged for anything else ever?

i used to try to actively help people with events and things, but it's been a long time.
thank you for trying to cheer me up however, that's quite a story.

i'm not going to be too harsh on the mod for this, honestly.
i'm usually a lot more careful and actually check out what stuff means before i use it as a name.

i do wish there was some kind of prior communication or simple warning, or even some kind of detailed explanation left in my inbox before punitive action was taken, however.

the display name changing ban will be over in a few hours, but i ultimately feel like this is 100% my fault.

Edit: lol I saw what link they put in. it wasn't the name, Steam doesn't have a way to remove someone's suspicious custom Steam Profile Link.

this is about my display name, not my custom url
which i have been changing periodically

edit: how are all of you able to see any of my past names when they've already been cleared?

The reason is because you used an offensive name. Anything that breaks the community rules and guidelines is bound to be removed after reported. You should contact support if you feel they made a mistake because it's between you and them now.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
