Bug: Compatibility screen gets locked for some games
Often when I go to the properties of a game, the "compatibility" tab gets locked. The dropdown for selecting proton version disappears and I can't uncheck the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" checkbox.

It seems like it's supposed to stop you from changing the compatibility settings while the game is running. But it stays that way long after I've quit the game and make sure it's not running. Even Steam shows the "Play" button instead of "Stop" as it would for games that aren't running.

Restarting Steam seems to work. However that's a hassle, especially when using the Steam Deck.

Is there a solution for this?

This issue may occur if the game you're trying to modify is currently running or if there is an issue with the Steam client. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Make sure the game is not running: Before attempting to modify the compatibility settings of a game, make sure that the game is not running. Close the game and exit out of the Steam client completely.

Verify the game files: Sometimes, issues with game files can cause compatibility settings to become locked. To verify the game files, right-click on the game in your Steam library and select "Properties" > "Local Files" > "Verify integrity of game files". This will check for any missing or corrupt files and replace them as necessary.

Restart the Steam client: If verifying the game files does not resolve the issue, try restarting the Steam client. Exit out of the Steam client completely and then relaunch it. Attempt to modify the compatibility settings for the game again.

Try running Steam in compatibility mode: In some cases, running Steam in compatibility mode may resolve compatibility issues. Right-click on the Steam shortcut and select "Properties" > "Compatibility" > "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select the appropriate version of Windows.

Reinstall Steam: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to reinstall the Steam client. Uninstall the Steam client and then download and install the latest version from the official Steam website.
