Steam Auto Update
ok so how TF do I stop steam from updating my games

I have a game that I liked to run with older mods (not compatible with new updates) I was able to revert it to its older version but I can't play the older version of that game until I update
WTF DO I DO

We can edit this file so Steam will treat the game as up-to-date.

There's a tool that can automate the process: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/for_a_better_steam_client/discussions/1/3417685271692378840/

or could do things manually:

- Get the game's APP_ID

- Quit Steam if its running

- things should be straightforward but make a backup of the game's appmanifest file:
…\steamapps\appmanifest_[APP_ID].acf

- Open the game's appmanifest file in Notepad

- Change the value of "StateFlags" from "6" to "4"

- Lower in the file you'll see the InstalledDepots section
"InstalledDepots" { "2728171" <========== DEPOT_ID { "manifest" "2034371682292317285" <======== MANIFEST_ID "size" "3904589538" } }

- Insert the DEPOT_ID then visit the link:
https://steamdb.info/depot/<DEPOT_ID>/manifests/

- Overwrite the MANIFEST_ID with the newest one SteamDB displays

- Repeat for any other DEPOT_ID there may be within InstalledDepots

- Save and close file.

- Start Steam

It's easy to do the above but another option:
- make a copy of the game's folder
- allow Steam to do the update
- replace the updated game folder with the old version

Steam's main design is to keep games updated. It doesn't have a way of turning them off completely. The developers can make use of multiple Steam depots to offer their players older versions, but that is not something they are obligated to do. Some devs are sympathetic to modders. Many others don't. Ask the game devs to utilize Steam's depots to offer you a version of the game you want.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
