Syber steam box. Going back to Steam OS?
Hi all. I think this might actually be my first post! Since i've been with Valve/Steam from the start that's a bit embarrassing.
I have a question regarding my Syber steam box which i bought in 2016 ish. I've seen some posts that were on a similar subject but couldn't find anything that gave me an answer that i would say is definitive. My Steam PC came preloaded with Steam OS all those years ago, but i quickly (as soon as i received the PC) installed Windows (possibly 8, can't remember) on it. It's currently on Windows 10 and cannot upgrade to 11 (i hear there are workarounds). With 10 support coming to an end, and me having a newer build as my main gaming PC now, i wondered, is it possible to reinstall Steam, and if so, what version and where would i find it.
I'm sure there were others who did this with their original Steam boxes and might have done what i am asking now?
This machine runs games perfectly well for a 2016 spec machine and i let the grand-kids use it so i don't want to retire it.
Any help would be appreciated....thanks in advance

As just a gaming machine, you'll probably be okay for a while still. Look how many people stubbornly refuse to move on from Windows 7.

Thanks for your suggestions, i will look into Bazzite as i hope to keep this PC running a few more years yet.
You might also check out Nobara[nobaraproject.org], which has a version specifically set up to work like SteamOS. There's also ChimeraOS[chimeraos.org], which has an immutable base system like SteamOS does.

You've posted before in 2016, 2020, and 2023, so not quite your first post. Also your account started in 2014, so about 10-11 years after the beginning. Still, welcome to the forums!

Very understandable since back then there was no Proton, so game compatibility was extremely limited. Lots of people just put Windows on theirs too. They were decent little PCs for the price once they were running Windows.

Being from 2016, I wouldn't expect your GPU to support Vulkan, which is needed for the Proton compatibility layer to do it's magic. I would keep Windows 10 on it. It's probably a decent enough little machine for what it is, but nothing more than that.

Edit:
From your 2016 post, I see that machine has an Nvidia GTX960, which does in fact support Vulkan, so it would work. You still might want to stick to Windows for that system though. It's an old card and I wouldn't expect the performance optimizations they've been doing to apply to it, so you may experience degraded performance running Linux/SteamOS. Also the new, full release of SteamOS is not yet ready and as it is now is still only for the Steam Deck. There are very functional alternatives though like Bazzite[bazzite.gg] that serve the same purpose.

Great detective work on my history @Haruspex. However, i joined before 2014 under a different name, but gave that account away to one of my sons as it had loads of his games on it and i started a new account (this one).

Back to the topic at hand.

If i keep it Windows 10, i'm going to lose support by year end and i'm a little nervous about that situation. I know i could pay for ongoing MS support, but how long would that be available anyway? I could also leave it "offline" except for Steam updates, game downloads and play i suppose but that would feel a little limiting.

I can't complain, as you see, i have had the system for 9 years and it's never let me down and played newer titles well enough. The only upgrade it got was a new Noctua CPU fan, all else is original parts.

Thanks for your suggestions, i will look into Bazzite as i hope to keep this PC running a few more years yet.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

losing support at the end of the year for win10 doesnt mean steam stops working on that day. people are still using win7 for now and support ended over a year ago.

What was the point of this part of your response to my post?

I mentioned my time on Steam as an introduction of myself and I'm the OP.

I'm also quite aware that Steam would still work when Windows support ends. I am an experienced pc gamer.

Why are so many people unnecessarily blunt/rude/obnoxious when posting on forums? This is why I don't normally bother posting :steamsalty:

It's the anonymity and lack of risk of getting punched in the face. Zero potential repercussions. I know I probably speak more freely online than I would in the real world for this reason, sometimes in spite of my best intentions.

I'm by no means thin skinned or easily offended, but it does grind my gears when people behave in this way.

There's no need, it adds nothing to the topic and is a pointless distraction to my original post.

Still, thanks for your help Haruspex, much appreciated.

Look out for my next post in 2030 :lunar2019grinningpig:
