Steam Screenshot Manager - A Bugged Rant
tldr; the Screenshot Manager is such a pain to use and it keeps getting worse, I hate it so damn much

I deleted a screenshot from the cloud by mistake and I want to reupload it. But it's not showing up on my local library anymore, despite the file definitely existing. If anyone knows a way to fix this, please let me know. I don't want to have to edit a bunch of VDF files again if I can help it.

Rant below:

I like Steam, it's convenient if not buggy at times when opening URLs on mobile. But the one thing that continually irritates me is the Screenshot Manager. It used to be in a be in a better state but it's gotten worse over the years and I can't figure out why.

  • To start, when selecting multiple screenshots to upload, it doesn't upload them in the order they were taken or selected; just the order it took for them to reach the cloud first.
  • A recent change they made means that individual screenshots no longer retain the privacy setting you set for them, but the one that the collective group has set. In the past, screenshots with captions would also lose this when uploading multiple at a time, but that seems to have been fixed.
  • When you start uploading a screenshot, there's no way to cancel it...a stupidly basic feature that I'd have thought would be one of the earliest additions to the tool.
  • If you delete a screenshot from online, it remains in your manager locally as being "on the cloud" until you restart the program. Then it disappears entirely, despite not being deleted locally. And trying to just delete the image and its thumbnail can cause Steam to think it's own data is corrupt, as I found out a few weeks ago.
  • For screenshots that were uploaded to the cloud then deleted that you want to re-upload, you need to manually edit VDF files and it's so finnicky that a lot of the tutorials for it may be inaccurate or outdated even within the last year.[/list/

Ditto all of this. The big UI updates in the past couple of years have made things worse or just flat out buggy.

I've also deleted screenshots in the local folder, but now I still have a tile with an error in my list of screenshots. What can I do to delete these tiles? :(

The new screenshot manager is a calamity and I don't know what they were thinking. The fact you have to upload a string of screenshots individually so they appear in the right order is just a travesty in terms of basic functionality. I also hate how an uploaded screenshot jumps to the front so you have to then click on the next correct one, plus it doesn't help having all your previously uploaded screenshots on the page either.

Just wondering. Does your screenshot manager works without an internet connection?

Deleting a file might help, but please be careful, and make proper backups. I don't want to mess things up for you.
