It's one of the most common scam now because users fall for it. Threads such as this regarding discord scams are common place with many of them only posting here after they've been phished and think the name change to "VAC BANNED" etc is real.
What you encountered was just the opening act of the scam.
If you stop interacting with the scammer and don't do anything they suggest/request then it is over yes.
What I meant is what you encountered was the hook of the scam. Falling for that is what pulls you into the body of the scam.
Your specific experiences and knowledge don't project on billions of people, or even tens of millions of Steam users.
Scams pre-date 2005 after all and they're all the same and exploit the same human weaknesses. Those weaknesses haven't been bred out of humans in the last 17 years.
