"Reserving Space" on External SSD taking forever?
When I download games to my external SSD they take forever when the download first begins and is in the "Reserving Space" phase. When I install games to my internal drive, this goes extremely fast (takes maybe one minute max no matter the game size) however, when I install games to the external drive this takes forever, like one to two minutes per GB of the game.
Is there something that I am missing?

Details: CPU i5 11400F, External SSD is 2TB SanDisk Extreme 55AE SCSI connected through USB-C Port.

EDIT: January 4th, '23: SOLUTION

Formatting the drive to NTFS fixed the issue.

PS.: did anyone test out Bobby's solution?

That's really helpful thank you, I might give it a try.

I've noticed that the issue has gone away when I have my external drive unconnected from the PC. I have a large SSD external I use for more space on my PC. When it's connected to the PC the games will reserve space at like 20mb/s max and for a game that's over 10GB that can be hours.

For larger games I just disconnect it and install them to my internal SSD.

I'm thinking it's because of the cord or something, even though it's USB-C and should be fairly quick.

At some point I'll reformat it and see if this helps.

If your external is currently exfat then yes, reformatting the drive to NTFS will make reserving space much quicker. I had the same problem and it was easily fixed just by reformatting the drive to NTFS. Just make sure you back up all your stuff from the drive before reformatting it.

And today you can say steam system information dont catch Disk formated system, but as you see why we struggle with this then you assume all drevs is in NTFS as windows user there is no other choiss in formating disk at win7/8 and even in win10 why will i make a disk in ExFat-

And be happy we bother to tell you this. ( we is i and other helper here ) we dont think over this, then you know and take disk format for granted. ) i only notice this later then i bought a external disk and its was preformated in Exfat.

And now you get it why this post is Full of mistakes from A to Z.

what is more odd it do this, how will you instal a full game that require NTFS rights that actual not possible, so you see this debat is not over. and missing from the debat here.

You also will have isisue with move a steam game from a ExFat to NTFS or other way.
this is fact.

eough of This Exfat issue stop use it. unless you need to move data among 3 system outside steam , but with steam dont have it installed it can screwup as a flash stick FAT system did in the past if i remmeber correctly from way back at shogun2 and user could not install or run the game.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
