I can't delete a Steam game backup.
I'm trying to delete F.E.A.R. folder game backup but a pop up says the file is no longer located, I've been trying to use command prompt to delete it but don't know how to.

This is my file structure for where this is located.

F:\PC Stuff\PC Game Backups\Steam Game Backups

Edit: I created a new partition for my hard drive to get rid of it then I dragged the installed Fear files and dropped it into my storage hard drive.

On win7 64bit, with the exact same problem when backing up F.E.A.R.

A search online has found other steams users left with an undeletable F.E.A.R file after backup. The backup file exsist when viewed from the cmd prompt but the directory "can not be found" when trying to move or delete the files.

I have never seen one of these threads resolved and after trying everything thats been posted I'm assuming everyone resorted to a format.

The question is, does the backup of F.E.A.R break everytime it is attempted (win7 64bit)?

Edit: I have backed up over 200 games without running into any issues before fear decided to be an A-hole.

I recently had this happen and was lucky enough to come across a solution that worked. First, open a command prompt as admin. Then navigate to the Steam backup folder. Then type in dir /x /a which will show you the folder and it's short name (e.g. F.E.A.R = FEAR~1). Then just type in rd FEAR~1 /s and it should kill the directory and any of its subs. Then when backing up FEAR in the future, just override what Steam calls it and call it FEAR instead. Worked for me anyway and I'm running the same OS as you.

thank you Veil_Lord!

rd FEAR~1 /s >> success delete the folder
named backup folder as "FEAR" >> success backup the game
Veil_Lord you're a genius Thanks for the hint. Worked for me .
Veil_Lord, thank you so much. This solved my issue.
Great, I'm glad it helped. I think Windows just gets confused with all the periods, so it's not strictly speaking a Steam issue, but it'd still be nice if they checked for problem file names before creating backups. Having a folder you can't do anything with is terribly irksome.
