Dark Souls: Dark Wood Grain Ring

I'm new to the forums thing so if this is in the wrong place, I'm sorry.

Ok, now. The ring is pretty cool. I didn't want to kill the ninja directly to get it so I got a tip from a bro saying if I aggro the cragspider I could block his fire attack and he would kill the ninja for me without upsetting Shiva or the Forest Hunters. Well, well just like many things in Dark Souls, that didn't work. I pissed off the cragspider, it killed the ninja, and Shiva got angry at me. I never once swung my sword against anything, not even the cragspider. It doesn't really matter now since I got the ring before I died.

But what exactly happened? Was this some sort exploit patch where if the ninja dies Shiva auto aggros you ?
