Game not closing on quit, running as unkillable background process.
Hey.

Recently, whenever I quit games they're not closing properly. They appear closed but Steam says I'm still in-game. If I look under processes in the Task Manager the game's .exe is either: a) missing, b) an unkillable background process, c) there, but when I end it it THEN becomes an unkillable background process, or d) missing but found in the Resource Monitor as an unkillable process.

I can't get back into the game or verify caches because I'm *apparently* still playing the game. The only way to close the program is to restart Windows. Signing out and back in relaunches Steam but, there it is again, I'm still in-game. End-tasking Steam doesn't allow me to kill the game's process either.

This is happening for a variety of games. Hammerwatch, Risk of Rain, Crusader Kings 2, Monaco.

Can anyone help?

I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro and I'm admin.

How did you close the games? Did you click "quit game" or something similar to that or did you just click the red X?

got the same problem
Just "quit". "exit to windows", or whichever option there is on the main menu. And good to know I'm not the only one.

*bump*
I have the same problem. I can quit a game via the in-game option, go back and try to re-launch later in the day and steam will tell me "app already running". So I go to task manager to find the process, only to find out that it isn't "running" as far as windows is concerned. I can kill steam.exe, which will allow me to play my game, but I'd really rather not have to resort to a workaround just to play the games that I paid for.
