However, I have noticed that Ubisoft aren't consistent with listing uPlay as 3rd party DRM on their pre-purchase games. I can personally recall Rayman Legends, Trials Fusion (still not listed after release!) and Child of Light, though there are more in the past year or so that I just can't seem to remember.
With the exception of Trials Fusion, all these games magically have uPlay mentioned on their store pages when the game is out.
Personally, I feel not listing this vital information is an underhanded business tactic. Last year, I pre-purchased Rayman Legends. There was confusion as to whether uPlay would be required or not on the Steam version as the store did not mention it as such. Plus, combined with the fact Rayman Origins did not require uPlay, people were of the opinion it would be the same case here.
So the moment it release, I downloaded it...then to my dismay during installation it asked for uPlay. Not impressed, I filed a refund request with Steam, and they rejected it on the grounds that I had "installed and played the game". Come on, how else was I supposed to know the game had uPlay?
You can say that people should know all Ubisoft games come with uPlay, but that's besides the point. And also, make no mistake - I do not have any hate towards uPlay. Aside from their patching system, I actually have no issues with uPlay whatsoever.
In short, I would like to see Steam and Ubisoft be more responsible in handling the listing of 3rd party DRM. If there is any truth to the allegations that Ubisoft is doing this knowingly, then Steam should take appropriate action against them, or at least grant refunds to unknowing users who demand it.
PS: A mod deleted a similar thread I made moments ago. This is a constructive post and I believe this issue does need addressing.
How about reading my actual thread?
