DayZ standalone launch - ''unable to locate a running instance of steam''
Hi everybody, i'm having a prolem with steam not launching DayZ standalone when i click play game. i get an error window saying ''unabe to locate a running instance of steam.'' This problem started a while ago on my old machine which i had used to play the game for a while, I tried a couple of things to help the desync i was getting in game then this started. I built a new machine totally fresh and installed steam and dayz and it worked fine for a while but then it started again. wiped this new build and reinstalled everything again but i'm still getting this message. I've tried all sorts to fix it but I'm getting nowhere.. any advice welcome, and thanks in advance.

Please verify your local games files, to do so please right click on dayz in your library and then go to propreties >> local files >> verify game files.
It should download missing game files.
Post back here for feedback.

You should calm down and watch your language. If you have a game problem you can post about it in a seperate thread and i will help you. Raging won't help the either of us.

This might sounds silly, but restart your steam client and try launching DayZ.
Tell me if the problem persists.

Ok, so some people on the forums faced this issue too, the solution is to reinstall steam but im gonna guide you through it without having to delete your games.
Go to your steam folder and then delete everything except for Steam.exe and the folder called Steamapps. Now launch steam, it will update and ask you to login. Do it and start dayz.
Tell me if it works, good luck!

^This

However, u also don't want to delete the folder called UserData.
Be sure to launch Steam.exe AS ADMIN, by right clicking it and selecting that option.
If you have a desktop (or other) shortcut for Steam, make sure to go to its properties > compatibility and tick the option for "Run As Admin" and apply. So it always runs this way.

Once u log back into Steam, go to Properties for DayZ within Steam Library; go to Local Files tab, then click on Verify Game Cache to ensure DayZ game files are intact before running it again.

EDIT:
Most people never turn on the options in Windows allowing them to always have visable file extensions. So in your case, in Steam folder, change the view to Details, then the file just called Steam that is an Application for file type, is actually Steam.exe

exe is a file extension you don't see a file called "steam.exe" but you see a file called steam (which is the steam launcher)

So basically like this;

Highlight all files in Steam folder by pressing CTRL+A
Then de-select what u do not want to delete by pressing CTRL+Left Mouse Click on these;

Steam (Application)
UserData (Folder)
SteamApps (Folder)

Then delete the rest. Then right click Steam file and click Run As Admin.

k, so delete everything except- Steam, Steamapps, UserData. once iv'e done that. Run Steam as Admin by going to its properties. once steam is running verify game cache. right. forgive me i'm not the techiest of people
