Also make sure you have your laptop plugged in to AC power to improve performance.

Make sure your laptop is connected to the AC adaptor. If it is and it's still lagging then your Nvidia settings aren't setup right. Go to Nvidia's control panel and make sure in Global Settings you have "auto-select" enabled. If it's alrady enabled then click "Nvidia high-performance processor" like this:

Also, try tuning the windows power option to high performance.
Actually, do you have geforce expereince optimizing the games? Because I was having issues with portal 2 when optimizing it with geforce expereince. However, that was when it was in beta.
