Game I own originally registered to different account
I bought a game in 2008 from play.com which required this platform called Steam to run, which I installed and made an account for. A couple of years later I bought more games and made a Steam account not realising I already had one. Cue plenty of confusion with 2 accounts, not knowing which is which, and friend lists.

Steam refused to change this game over to my main account. I could quite easily log into both my accounts, which had the same personal details for me, and were both made by me in the same location with the same IP, to prove they were mine. But Steam simply refused. I didn't want to accidentally install any more games on the account with just the 1 game on it, so to prevent confusion I let Steam delete that account. The end result is I have a game for which I have the physical CD and box, the original store purchase receipt, and no way of playing it.

Is there any way to play the game I own?

You cannot transfer the game between accounts. Nothing you can do there.

But you can enable Family Sharing on your second account and share the game with your main account.

Unfortunately, no, games are bound permanently to the account they are activated on. You would have been better off just keeping the old account as well for that game alone. They do not allow people to transfer games for very obvious reasons, including cheaters and scammers.

It has nothing to do with cheaters and scammers -- they just don't want to do it, and nobody can force Steam to do anything they don't want to.
Enable Family Sharing on your old account and share the library with your new account. Then you can use your new account for all your games.
I had this issue with Metro 2033, still have to work this out.

No, it actually has quite a bit to do with cheaters and scammers. Imagine if you were a cheater or a scammer and you could simply move all of your games to a different account when caught? Bingo, instant reset. It's common sense to prevent this really.
Thanks TirithRR I'm amazed in 6 years Steam didn't once suggest that to me. I'll give it a try and see if it allows me to play my game!

Family Sharing is something they just added in the last few months. They couldn't have suggested it to you 6 years ago :)

Probably because it was only introduced in the last year :)
