Games For Windows Live, Unable to Log in.
"The Windows Live ID you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect"

The message I recieve when I try to sign in to play Dark Souls. I've had Dark Souls for a while now, and GFWL as well, I've had no problems with anything before, until last night, when it was storming hard. The internet cut out for a little while but it came back on, and I was unable to solve/fix it. I thought it would be fixed today, but it has not.

I have reinstalled GFWL, and tried the Games for Windows Marketplace as well, I can't log in there because I get one of two error codes. The first one is error code 80048401 "Can't sign in. Windows live ID or password is not valid etc." They are valid, I reset the password twice. Email is correct.

The second error code is 80048849 "The profile could not be signed in to LIVE. There may be a network problem or the Windows Live ID service may not be available." I am connected to the internet. I have steam going, and several webpages going to try to find the answer. I updated and reinstalled GFWL twice.

Attempted to get rid of the 2 step authentication process, still didn't work and I believe I did it correctly.

I switched my interent from wireless to ethernet.

I can log into the xbox live website just fine and send messages to friends from there. My subscription hasn't expired.

The only thing I am not sure about is if the ports are open to allow certain gameplay. My firewall is not the windows Firewall, I have Avast.

I use Windows 7, MSI MS-7845, i5-4570 CPU, 16 GBs ram, graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (Don't think that matters)

Nothing is working, and It's extremely frustrating. I hate GFWL with a passion and my computer was made for gaming, and I can't even play one of my favorite games because of this. It worked fine until last night.

Same thing will happen to steam, but it'll make all your games unplayable.

Wonderful.
It has not been shut down.

It has been discontinued, and is rumored for a July shut down. Some games will have it patched out other won't. Steam is gradually pulling games from the store as the devs/publishers announce they won't be removing GFWL like in Bullet Storm's case. So take stock of your existing games with GFWL and research who has and has not announced patches, and make a priority to play the games that won't because Steam isn't going to help you after the games are no longer functional unless they miss removing some from the store and they are bought after the GFWL shutdiwn date.

If you're having issues with your GFWL account you will need to contact Microsoft

GFLW is still 100% operational for now

Contact Xbox support for your issues

Also, just found out that my account works for GFWL on other computers. I can log in just fine. It's just my computer.

That sounds more like the GFWL install tehre is scrweed up.

For asy checks, ensure your hosts file is not corrupted, and try switching your DNS to GoogleDNS or OpenDNS

If the above easy stuf doesnt help reinstall GFWL

1) Uninstall GFWL
2) REBOOT (DO NOT SKIP THIS)
3) Download GFWL from microsoft.com
4) Install GFW
5) REBOOT (DO NOT SKIP THIS)

Ok so i did the steps of uninstalling reboting and so on. Now i log in with my new password and it pops up "profile dose nt exist" so i tried my old password and it says "network not connected or GFWL is down"

TWrecks Apr 13, 2014 @ 4:09pm

I had awful trouble using GFWL recently having not used it for years. Might be a long shot but try signing into live.xbox.com through your web browser. I had to accept some new terms and conditions there before I could log into the Windows client.

Sorry, I just re-read your OP and see that you can login to website :(

How is this a Steam issue??? Shouldn't you be posting in Microsofts forums?
TWrecks Apr 13, 2014 @ 4:55pm
posted both places, just hoping someone would know

I'm kinda late, but try shutting off the 2-step verification for GFWL then try again. I was having the same problem; took me a few minutes to figure out but doing this did allow me to finish the install.
P.S. Dont forget to turn on 2-step verification once your done. Good Luck

For anyone having an issue with Games for Windows Live giving you an error about an incorrect password or ID not existing PLEASE follow what D_Hydra says above. You MUST turn off two step verification in order to play GFWL games through steam. If you have this turned on you WILL NOT be able to log in and play games.

It took me 7 days of contacting support for this issue to be resolved all thanks to a clued in support member.
