How to: Add Windows 8 Metro Apps to Steam
I did some fiddling around the internet, and I finally found a way to access Windows Metro Apps as a Steam Shortcut:

1. Find the app's name (called its protocol) using these instructions: Here[www.itsjustwhatever.com]

2. Make a batch file with these two lines:
start "insert protocol name here" PAUSE

3. Convert it to an EXE using the Batch to EXE Converter tool here: Click Here[www.f2ko.de]

I have some premade ones available in my public Dropbox for the following:
  • Microsoft Minesweeper: Click Here[dl.dropboxusercontent.com]
  • Microsoft Solitaire Collection: Click Here[dl.dropboxusercontent.com]
  • Pinball FX2 (Microsoft): Click Here[dl.dropboxusercontent.com]

3. Place them somewhere, and remember where you put them.

4. In Steam, go to Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library

5. Go to Browse

6. Find the shortcut and add it.

Simple as that! Again, I suggest using the premade ones since I've already tested them. There are a couple of downsides to it though:

-The Steam overlay will not work. This is unavoidable.
-Whether you are playing the game or not is determined by the console window that pops up when you open the EXE file. Keep it up while you are playing, then press any key in it when you are done.

Hope this helps :D

Try using the original method. I can't find to better method anymore, and I can't seem to find anything new on the topic.

I never really found a working method myself so I just added Notepad as a non-steam game, renamed it to Minecraft Windows 10 Edition and closed it off when I was finished playing.
Do you know of a way to launch the app in full screen mode?

BTW if anyone is looking to do this now with Windows 10 find the protocol name remove the URL: and add : at the end. So If I want to launch Deezer I find the protocol name as URL:deezer. My bat file will look like this:

start "deezer:"

this will launch the windows 10 app

*** Like I said above the only thing I can't figure out is how to get the app to launch in FULL SCREEN

At least in Windows 10, there should be a button at the top of the window next to maximize, minimize, and exit that toggles fullscreen.

I made a batch file into an EXE (I just recompiled someone else's batch file so it wouldn't have a stupid 10 second "this was made with a trial version of some compiler" BS) and placed it here. All you gotta do is... add it to steam and make a banner if you use grid view. A command prompt opens for a few seconds, scrolls some text quickly then bam! Minecraft Windows 10 is open. Feel free to scan it if you wish, it works for me, it worked for the person who originally made it without any modification, so it should work for anyone that installed to the default location (can you even change windows app locations?)

Just click the link, it says "no preview available" (because it's not a text, PDF or image file), and click the blue "Download" link right below the text.

I just used MetroLauncher Type 2 from here - http://www.itsjustwhatever.com/downloads/ and was able to launch killer instinct in steam.
Once I get my steam controller (Hopefully tomorrow) I will be able to see if that is also possible.
I use the one that stays in memory as the other one included in the download closes itself as soon as the W10 app is activated.
Hope that helps you guys.

It's not necessary to make a EXE from a batch file...

Just add a shortcut to C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe

Go into properties, and click set launch options

Change them to the following (adjusting the start command for your game)

/k "start forzamotorsportapex:// & pause & exit"

You can also remove "& pause" from the above line but that may cause issues for in-home streaming
