How to rename steam games (local only)
renaming games seems to come up often and since this isn't a feature of steam yet, I figured I would simply post how I do it.

you simply need to modify "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\appcache\appinfo.vdf"

This is kind of temporary because if you ever have an issue where you have to delete appcache this file will be re-generated with the original name.

Simply open it in notepad++ (or something similar, notepad will break the file, don't use it) and rename the game, there will be multiple entries of the game name, find the one that follows "common name" (with special characters inbetween them) be sure NOT to delete any special characters. Notepad++ by default will show the special characters.

it is a low risk operation that can be fixed by deleting the file and have steam re-generate it.

you can always write a batch file or executable to repair the name to how you want it, just figured I would put the info out there.

Edit: also, you need to restart steam for it to re-load the game with the new name.

no problem, it would be nice if someone made a windows service to check for changes in the files and fix the names automatically. At least until steam adds the ability itself :-) I have thought about doing it, just never got around to it.

Now I can annoy people by pretending I'm playing Half Life 3 closed beta. Yay!

I don't think it shows up on others like that, although, I haven't tested that! would be hilarious. But I doubt their code is that flimsy.

No problem, although it doesn't sync, it just shows how easy they could theoretically implement it into their system. It is just a matter of time I suppose.

Eh, in fact it is pretty useless. Every update will restore the original name so give it a month and all your library will be back to normal.
