Hello bud, glad to hear you've got yourself a PC.

If you have a WIRED Xbox 360 controller, please go to
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows
Download and install this programme and plug your Xbox 360 controller into a USB port in your PC. You should be good to go.

For a WIRELESS Xbox 360 controller, please go to
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows
Download and install this programme. You will also need an Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver *EXAMPLE* http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PC-Wireless-Gaming-USB-Receiver-Adapter-For-Xbox-360-Controller-/260927335309?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item3cc07b2b8d

I myself have one like this. You simply plug it into one of your PCs USB ports, hold down the button and it will search for a wireless controller, (like your console does), simply press that sync button on your controller and they should become synced, and you should be good to go.

I know I ran into some issues with the receiver (Couldn't update it correctly), so if you do happen to purchase one, please give me a shout should you need some help

The games that support controllers, such as Xbox 360, will say "full controller support" somewhere in the game description on the game page. Games that I own that have Xbox 360 controller support are Portal 2, Section 8: Prejudice, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Alan Wake, DiRT 2, Batman Arkham City, and LIMBO. Basically any game that is on both Xbox 360 and PC will have support and select other games. Usually racing games, shooters, and other first person/third person games have Xbox 360 controller support (especially Microsoft games). Games exclusive for the PC and others such as strategy or older titles (Half-Life 2) will generally not support it. I hope this helps out! If there's a game you're interested in just check for support or search for games that have support. Like I said, console ports should be your best bet.

Also, you don't have to go to the microsoft website like Walt said. Your computer should install the device drivers automatically through Windows Update. If you have the updates disabled or not using Windows, then you might have to.

Correct, the controller is plug-and-play. However, if it is a wireless controller, your computer needs a Bluetooth receiver. If you built your own computer, it might not have one. You'll need to buy a USB Bluetooth nub if it doesn't.

Just wanted to correct you on one mistake in your post so rundoj doesn't miss out. Half-Life 2 does indeed have Xbox 360 controller support. I wouldn't want him to miss one of PC gamings finest hours. Also, You should be informed that partial controller support offers the player controller support in game but not in main menu. I have a very large library which all offer full or partial controller support (Except Modern Warfare). Trust me though, I play COD:WaW (Which does have controller support through a consoole command~enable defaultController.cfg) and it's not for the feint of heart. Expect to die often if you decide to pick it up. There is no aim support! Still fun times! Good to see the community helping out!

The Official Microsoft Wireless Xbox 360 Controller for Windows Bundle.
It comes bundled with the wireless gaming receiver and driver software disc.
Once you allow the software to run, the rest is automatic (Including driver updates and configurations for all partial and fully supported games). At the current price for the bundle it's a steal @ $41.00 (I got mine for $56.00) at Amazon. If you want 100% compatibility this is the way to go bro (Forget the wired garbage). I posted the link below. Later!

P.S

If you decide to try to go the cheaper route and grab wired....The controller must be officially manufactured by Microsoft for it to work. So, since yoou seem to be having trouble locating one just buy it on Amazon and set Microsoft as the "Brand" in the search results. It will make your shopping experience easier. But I don't recommend you go cheap, just bite the bullet.
