Then take that HD back to your PC, make sure steam is not running, and copy the game files to your steam install.
Restart steam and try to run the game (it may have to redownload the EXE file but that is tiny compared to the rest of the files)
That is a great idea. I'll have to borrow my internet at work which is of course not appropriate but I'll have to wing it.
I try to support game authors by buying their game but Steam really leaves me with a really bad impression. I hope its competitor Origin and Uplay will be better! If this continues I'll need to source my games from non-steam options.
Pro tip:
If buying a retail game, look on the backside for activation necessities. There you will find if a game needs Steam/Origina/Uplay.
right click
go to properties
go to local files
browse local files
find .exe file
open .exe file

you probably wont be able to play online but if you want to play singleplayer mode it should work just fine
it works with all my games that have true singleplayer capability (able to be played totally offline)
FSX SE
GTA IV
GMOD
BeamNG drive
Portal
Portal 2
Half-Life (all)
Fallout NV
L4D
L4D 2
Stranded deep
X-COM EU
