Updating and using steam without internet???
My gaming PC is soon to be without internet indefinitely. I am getting married and moving in with my soon to be wife. We will be living outside of the city and internet has not expanded to her area yet. Internet access will be limited to the Library, friends, and family.

Is it possible to keep my games up to date / install new games with my laptop? Maybe using an external hard drive? I can pair my phone to do small updates, but obviously it won't be feasible to download several GB's. Is there some way to make it work short of toting my entire PC to somebody's house?

If you update the games on your laptop, copy the files to your PC and then use your phone to connect your PC to the internet to authorize the update before going back to offline mode you should be fine.

when you have the last moments of internet connection put steam in offline mode and see if your games you want to play work.

test it a few times by restarting steam to make sure you got it all right

updating is going to be a problem steam uses unique encrypted .exe's for every user that need online conformation.
not all games but it is a steamworks feature.

You can't really update games without going online. You can go into offline mode but that's really it.

What 'offline' games would you be playing that would require frequent updates anyway?

Do it right and get satellite internet.

I guess it's not about updating, and more about being able to add new games I buy. Even with a retail disk I'm sure I'll need to connect to the internet to verify, plus there are tons of games that aren't released retail.

Satellite internet may be my only option for a while, but i hear the speed and service is abysmal. Plus there is a gb cap, it may be more worth it to upgrade my phone plan, unlimited data should still be an option!!!

satallite internet cause problems with steam because of the proxy connection.

The only way to do that is to download the game somewhere else, copy the c:\program files\staem\steamapps\common\<game name> to your computer. then install it which should use the local files.

However you still need to be online and you may need to download some files as well when doing so. After that you should then go offline.

I live out in the sticks and have satellite internet but it is not so great for gaming because of latency or updates because they limit your download to small amounts. I went and got a Verizon MiFi hotspot and it works great. It is 4G and has great latency.

Steam simply isn't meant for "offline"-people.

You'll need to be online, once in a while. There's an offline mode, but that isn't going to solve all your problems.

No friends with Internet either? No workplace with Internet where you hook up your box every once in a while?
