PLEASE HELP. I CAN'T USE STEAM
I am new on steam. I recently installed it in order to play the new South Park game.

I use windows 7 64 bit. I installed steam. The program installs successfully. But when I start it, I see a message that says "updating steam // Verifying installation." As soon as that message disappears, my computer crashes.

I have updated the BIOS, and my video and sound controllers.

I tried running steam with the -tcp command (I read on this forum it helps some people).

I also removed all background programs on System Configuration.

None of these options (or any combination of them) actually helps.

The only way to make steam work is by starting the system on Safe Mode With Networking. But I can't do this every time I want to play.

I have contacted Steam Support, but they reply very slowly!

Please, can anyone suggest me what to do?

It stops working. Everything freezes. So I have to reboot it.

Do you get an error message?

support is going to link this FAQ
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493

but you did the samemode+networking thing so it must be a firewall.

disabling a firewall is never good enough to test the isssue , unless it is the windows firewall.

I don't get any error message.

I already tried to run it as Administrator, but I get the same problem.

What Anti-Virus are you running? (check SP:SoT is added to it's exceptions list)

Is there any sound with the crash? (i'm thinking no)

Have a look in Event Viewer, it might give you an idea of what particular process/service is causing it.

Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. The computer freezes.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection.

No sound with the crash.

Let me check the event viewer and reply later. I need to try to install steam again, because I have too many events in the last couple of days (because I have been trying many methods to solve the issue). So, I want to make sure which one is related to steam.

I do have the windows firewall, but I added steam to the safe programs.

Let me check the router and reply back later.

Thanks everyone :)

Try Control+Shift+Escape. that will bring up taskmanager manually.

This is weird. I turned off the firewall, but on the event viewer, the error message is this:

Log Name: Application

Event ID: 1
Task Category: None

safemode excluded the router it worked there , the router is not the problem.
people never get that , it shows it must be something you have installed that does not startup with safemode.
because it worked.

remove steam from your windows firewall and let it relearn , no need to add things yourself.

the error message is clear too , maybe you have security software installed you do not remember.
review your installed software.

edit:you use norton or symantec , I bet it is the issue.
its just malware on its own.
it has somekind of network protection feature.

I use symantec. Now I got the following error message on the event viewer:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Resource-Exhaustion-Resolver/Operational
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Resource-Exhaustion-Resolver
Date: 3/4/2014 2:23:56 AM
Event ID: 1002

Computer:
Description:
The Windows Resource Exhaustion Resolver stopped.

EDIT: I just realized I have Symantec Endpoint Protection, Norton Security Scan, and Windows Firewall. I don't know if the overlap or complement each other. Any suggestions?

turn off one or the other or both
if you want to keep norton turn off windows firewall
if you want to keep windows firewall turn off the norton firewall
running together complicates things
and a router firewall to probably does anything get out of your pc lol

I wasn't aware I had them. I guess they came already installed on the PC.

So, I uninstall Norton Security Scan. Is that all I need to do?
What do you mean by router firewall?
spoof Mar 9, 2014 @ 10:21pm
the router is not the issue , steam worked in safemode , duh.

I tried all the steps suggested here:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493

But it still keeps crashing.

I uninstalled all unnecessary security software. I removed all steam exe files from the firewall safe programs. But it still doesn't work.

I disabled all background applications, but I keep getting the same error. What kind of program might be running after disabling all the background applications, but doesn't run on Safe Mode?
spoof Mar 9, 2014 @ 10:59pm
so what security sofware is left?

that end point has network features.
stop using symantec products your system will love you for it.

disabling residential security software never works they all keep doing there thing.
