"Add a game > add a non-steam game"
It's the same "+ ADD GAME" button on your library window that you use to register Steam keys, just a different option in the menu that pops up.
But some folks do like having them listed within their library for convenience. But again unless allowed by Steam, it won't actually become part of your Steam account, just a shortcut is all.
It is a nice way to allow others to see what you are running.
When a non-Steam app is added to the listing, it will have the .exe name. For example I added Need For Speed Rivals to my listing, but the root file is NFS14.exe, so it shows as "NFS14". Simply right click that and go to properties and from there u can change the display name, which is what will show on your friends list for others to see, when that app is launched from Steam.
Tip #2: Don't necro threads, especially if they have nothing to do with your topic/issue.
