Windows XP SP3

For the life of me I can not figure out why steam will not run on it, all steam will do is say connecting to my user account but just hangs and stops responding and/or on the taskbar there are tabs for steam but you can't open them. I need some help on this problem, also when I use VMware Player under windows 7, running xp it will start steam in that but when XP is it's own install nothing works.

I went and installed all the updates that I could think of for xp that might of been causing it to stop responding but stil no luck.

if you run XP in safemode+networking does it start up than?

Nope, steam will say it's connecting to my account and then the screen will go black and when it comes back steam is no longer there

when you say updates you also mean service pack 3?

SP3 is already installed, what I mean by updates are the inbetween like .net msxml and so forth.

I will try and install XP myself tomorrow I need to see myself if it still works.

Best of luck. I'm still going to try and figure out what is causing this but I'm sure it's probally a simple fix but then again who knows at this point.

have any custom windows fonts installed?
thats the weirdest one with steam and XP I seen.

took about a year of support to find , life is easier when you just format :)

I think I'm about to get pissed, on my main pc steam won't run under xp but what you know I'm using my laptop that has xp running on it and steam launches fine on here.

My last option is to grab the cd I used for my laptop and install that version.

Went and tried the version of xp that's on the laptop and installed it on my main pc but when I went to start steam on here it would keep crashing so I went into steam folder and deleted everything except for steamapps and the steam.exe, restarted my computer and re-ran steam and after it updated here I am now typing a way on XP. Problem solved it was an easy fix after all.

Scratch that problem still there, I was able to start downloading a game and when that game was almost done downloading steam went and crashed again and each time I try to restart it, would crash over and over and even stop responding. I went and deleted everthing again but no go this time around it keeps crashing. I give up on working with this useless operating system, if I have to keep jumping over hurdles to get a temp fix then it's not worth it to me to mod old games. Looks like steam is already preping to cut the support for XP because I can't get it to run on my system at all unless it's windows 7 or 8.
